rareseeds
rareseeds is Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company's online store, selling about 1,500 heirloom vegetable, flower and herb seeds. Jere Gettle started it in 1998 with a photocopied list of 70 varieties; every variety is open-pollinated, not hybrid, so seed can be saved and replanted.
Why it earned its spot
The homepage reads like a catalog spread rather than a shop grid: squashes are photographed as cut-outs floating on white, with no cards, borders or price tags, captioned in underlined italic like specimen labels. Section headings switch to a loose two-tone script — Saffron in purple above Crocus Bulbs in green — giving each block the hand-lettered feel of a nineteenth-century seed list while the navigation and search stay plain and sans-serif. Generous vertical spacing lets one crop at a time hold the page, and a black footer of icon-led growing promises closes things off after all that white.
