Preppy Kitchen
Preppy Kitchen is John Kanell's baking and home-cooking site, with tested recipes for cakes, cookies and weeknight dinners. He taught middle school math and science for over a decade before starting it in 2015, and still writes recipes that explain why a step works.
Why it earned its spot
The homepage is a long vertical stack of near-identical blocks: a centered serif heading, a row of four square food photographs, one pill-shaped button. The chrome is almost colorless — cream, off-white and pale blue bands mark the section breaks, and nearly every saturated pixel belongs to the food. Only two elements interrupt the rhythm, a portrait card where Kanell introduces himself and a dusty-rose newsletter panel, and both are sized to pause the scroll rather than stop it. For an archive this deep the predictability is the point: readers learn the pattern once and then scan.
