Instructure
Instructure makes Canvas, the learning management system that carries coursework, assignments and grading for schools and universities in over 100 countries. Canvas is open source under the AGPLv3, with its full codebase public on GitHub — unusual for infrastructure this entrenched.
Why it earned its spot
The homepage opens on an article rather than a product pitch: a two-line headline set in a heavy geometric grotesque, three lines of standfirst, one blue pill button, and white space for the rest. The hero photograph — mortarboards thrown against a pale sky, shot from below — carries a burst of flat blue rays that ties it to the same palette the labels and buttons use. Five thumbnail cards run beneath, each with a hairline progress bar marking its turn in the rotation. The only flash of colour in the wordmark is a red full stop.
