The Creative Independent publishes interviews and practical wisdom from working artists — musicians, writers, filmmakers — on how they sustain a practice. It is run as an ad-free resource by Kickstarter, which is why nothing on it is trying to sell anything.
Why it earned its spot
The index is a huge mosaic of solid-color tiles, one per interview, set in monospace with a date and nothing else — no photography, no pull quotes, just color standing in for imagery. It shouldn’t work as a reading interface and completely does: the palette gives every artist a door, the endless grid makes eight years of archive feel alive rather than buried, and a row of plain tabs (Everything, Interviews, Wisdom, Random) does all the wayfinding. A magazine that replaced its covers with paint chips.
